A member of one of the many reef-breaks dotting the winding shoreline between Pacific Beach and La Jolla, Bird Rock and the surrounding reefs can offer some of the best waves in the county on the right swell. And if there's no waves, a pair of goggles and a snorkel is all you'll need to make the most of things here.

Maybe the most consistent (and well known) big wave barrel spot in San Diego and probably one of the best beachbreaks in all of California, Blacks beckons surfers and nude sunbathers alike.
Crystal Pier

The original Crystal Pier was built in the 1920s with an amusement park and ballroom over the water. Those are gone today, but you can still rent a room at the Crystal Pier Hotel.
La Jolla Shores
La Jolla Shores in La Jolla, California.
The variety of beachbreak along the long flat stretch of La Jolla Shores can offer some really fun waves. To the north, you've got its big brother Blacks, and to the south you have La Jolla cove - both offering very different experiences than the shores.
O.B. Pier
O.B. Pier in Ocean Beach, San Diego, California.
The Ocean Beach Municipal Pier was constructed in the 1960s and was the longest concrete pier in the world, and the second longest in California. Big surf in back to back winter storms starting around 2020 forced the pier to close to the public, but aside from watching out for falling debris, you can still score some decent waves between the pier and the jetty to the north.
South Mission Jetty
South Mission Jetty in Mission Beach, California.
The jetty at the south end of the Mission Beach boardwalk is one of the most consistent and more remarkable breaks along that stretch of beach. The waves bounce right off the jetty and set up for a really nice left. During my last two years of undergrad, I was lucky enough to date a girl who lived steps away from here and let me keep a board at her place.
