Bird Rock

Bird Rock in La Jolla, California.

A member of one of the many reef-breaks dotting the winding shoreline between Pacific Beach and La Jolla, Bird Rock and the surrounding reefs can offer some of the best waves in the county on the right swell. And if there's no waves, a pair of goggles and a snorkel is all you'll need to make the most of things here.

Blacks

Blacks in La Jolla, California.

Maybe the most consistent (and well known) big wave barrel spot in San Diego and probably one of the best beachbreaks in all of California, Blacks beckons surfers and nude sunbathers alike.

Crystal Pier

Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach, California.

The original Crystal Pier was built in the 1920s with an amusement park and ballroom over the water. Those are gone today, but you can still rent a room at the Crystal Pier Hotel.

Horseshoe

Horseshoe in La Jolla, California

A local favorite and one of the many little reefs between PB Point and La Jolla Shores. On the right swell, Horseshoe can look more like something you'd expect to see on the North Shore rather than San Diego. It's a powerful wave with a small takeoff zone breaking over a pretty shallow rocky reef.

La Jolla Shores

La Jolla Shores in La Jolla, California.

The variety of beachbreak along the long flat stretch of La Jolla Shores can offer some really fun waves. To the north, you've got its big brother Blacks, and to the south you have La Jolla cove - both offering very different experiences than the shores.

Law Street

Law Street in Pacific Beach, California

Right about halfway between Crystal Pier and Tourmaline you'll find Law Street. A little more space to spread out and find a little peak of your own for a while.

Marine Street in La Jolla, California

Another local La Jolla/Birdrock/Windansea area favorite is Marine Street. A peaceful little stretch of beach with some pretty heavy shorebreak. Maybe better suited for a bodysurf than a board, but classic nonetheless.

O.B. Pier

O.B. Pier in Ocean Beach, San Diego, California.

The Ocean Beach Municipal Pier was constructed in the 1960s and was the longest concrete pier in the world, and the second longest in California. Big surf in back to back winter storms starting around 2020 forced the pier to close to the public, but aside from watching out for falling debris, you can still score some decent waves between the pier and the jetty to the north.

Scripps

Scripps in La Jolla, California

Marking the halfway point between La Jolla Shores and Blacks, the Scripps offers some great setups on both the northside and southside of the pier. The pier is home to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography of UC San Diego. It has got to be one of the most beautiful campuses in the UC system, and the institute is to thank for research aiming to understand and protect the ocean, the planet, wildlife and plants, and the places where we love to play in the water.

South Mission Jetty

South Mission Jetty in Mission Beach, California.

The jetty at the south end of the Mission Beach boardwalk is one of the most consistent and more remarkable breaks along that stretch of beach. The waves bounce right off the jetty and set up for a really nice left. During my last two years of undergrad, I was lucky enough to date a girl who lived steps away from here and let me keep a board at her place.

Sunset Cliffs

Sunset Cliffs in San Diego, California.

From prohibition-era booze-smuggling caves to the invention of the fish, Sunset Cliffs is an area with a ton of rich surfing history and a variety of waves of all shapes, sizes, and difficulties depending on the tides and conditions. The step trails and rocky cliffs do well to still keep some secrets too.

Torrey Pines State Beach

Torrey Pines State Beach in San Diego, California

Possibly one of the most scenic stretches of highway along San Diego's coastline, Torrey Pines State Beach is a great destination for a beach day, a less-crowded surf, or a hike. Torrey Pines Park Road (or the hiking trail) on the southern bluffs was once the main connection between Los Angeles and San Diego until it was finally closed to vehicle traffic in 1959.

Tourmaline

Tourmaline in Pacific Beach, California

Tourmaline sits right between PB Point and Crystal Pier, and serves as a surfing playground for surfers of all levels on all sorts of equipment. This print is one of the most popular in the series - maybe because the it captures the vibe of a classic summer evening in Pacific Beach or because most San Diego surfers and visitors have some great memories of this spot.

Windansea

Windansea in La Jolla, California

The beachside plam hut serves as the iconic landmark of the La Jolla staple. The shack has been there since 1947 as a shady escape between surfs, constructed by surfers coming home from WWII. In 1998, it was designated as a historical landmark
