Seasons for Surf in New York

  • Fall: Fall brings consistent swell along with temperate weather and comfortable water temperatures. End of summer and early Fall also mark the peak of Hurricane Season, which brings strong windows of some of the best surf on the East Coast from the south.

  • Winter: Winter brings some good, long period groundswells and some extremely frigid temperatures. If you have the equipment and the tolerance to bear the cold, you’ll find some quality, uncrowded surf between the ice cream headaches.

  • Spring: Temperature fluctuations are common in the Spring, which brings less consistent, shorter period windswell. Water temperatures start to increase towards the end of the season.

  • Summer: Summer brings warm water and lots of crowds. Getting to and from the beach can be a pain, and getting there to find no waves can be even worse. Most of summer is flat with the odd swell here or there until hurricane season picks up towards the end.
